NUAS - UKRAINIAN DIALOGUES

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has united civic activists and strengthened civil society networks across the Nordics, driving collective action to support Ukrainian resilience and regional democratic security. Since 2022, this mobilisation has been strongly reflected in Denmark, where civil society has actively contributed to defending human lives and freedom in response to Russia’s unjust aggression. Today, these organisations are at the forefront of shaping public discourse, advocating for democratic responses, delivering humanitarian assistance, and contributing first-hand Ukrainian experience to international discussions.

This growing role has enabled more coordinated responses to wartime challenges, brought together at the Nordic Ukraine Advocacy Summit — the region’s platform for cooperation and long-term strategic planning.

The Nordic Ukraine Advocacy Summit 2026 in Copenhagen will be the fourth annual regional meeting, following Stockholm, Helsinki, and Oslo, reflecting growing interest and participation. It brings these efforts together with Nordic partners to advance more coordinated action and shared strategies, convening Danish and Nordic civil society organisations alongside decision-makers, experts, and civic actors.

The 2026 summit theme, “A durable peace through democratic resilience: The Nordic–Ukraine partnership at scale,” focuses on translating civic momentum into durable, synchronised action aligned with Ukraine’s national priorities and Nordic democratic values. The summit will also bring together Nordic and Baltic civil society organisations, policymakers, and experts to advance practical, democratic approaches to strengthening the Nordic–Ukraine cooperation axis.

NUAS 2026 became the largest edition of the Summit to date, bringing together 100 participants from 47 organisations across nine countries — five Nordic countries, the three Baltic states and Ukraine. The Copenhagen meeting strengthened a growing Nordic–Baltic–Ukrainian civil society network and created new opportunities for practical regional cooperation.

Day 1, May 10, at Ukraine Culture House focused on collaboration and exchange. Representatives of civil society organisations from the Nordics, Baltics and Ukraine came together to connect, share experience and develop practical ideas for joint cooperation. The facilitated workshop “Collaborating Across Borders: Nordic-Baltic Support for Ukraine” explored what builds trust across borders, which challenges organisations face, what has worked in practice and what is needed for stronger future cooperation. Informal coworking and a networking dinner gave participants further space to deepen connections and continue discussions.

Day 2, May 11, at the Danish Parliament brought the network into a high-level strategic dialogue with experts and policymakers. A keynote address by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk was followed by discussions on pathways to a just peace and accountability for Russian war crimes, Nordic responses to hybrid threats and disinformation, and long-term cooperation between civil society, public institutions and decision-makers through a stronger Nordic–Ukraine civic axis.

NUAS participants visited Norden Hus in Copenhagen to better understand how Nordic cooperation is structured, its priorities and where civil society can engage. NUAS participants also joined the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, connecting the Nordic–Ukrainian civil society network with a broader international community of democracy advocates and contributing to discussions on the role of civil society in Nordic security.

NUAS 2026 created a lasting Nordic–Baltic–Ukrainian civil society network, supported by a shared online directory of 59 organisations. Partner coordination, knowledge exchange and new thematic activities continue, while NUAS 2027 in Vilnius is already being developed with Nordic and Baltic partners.
